Two ways to read

The verse is the unit.

Linear

Swipe up, and the next verse rises — Genesis 1:1, then 1:2, the way the book has always run.

Lateral

Swipe sideways, and a connected verse arrives. From Genesis 1:2 — “formless and void” — one swipe lands on Jeremiah 4:23: “I looked at the earth, and it was formless and void.” That swipe crosses 19,049 verses. You could read the Bible for decades and never see that echo.

The Bible has carried each new form of reading: the codex in the 2nd century, Gutenberg’s press in 1454, Estienne’s verse numbers in 1551. John 1:1 tries to carry that line onto the phone — fully offline, the whole of it on your device.
